Hair Loss (PRP) Q & A
What causes hair loss?
There are many different causes of hair loss, but the most common cause is heredity. After pregnancy, being under prolonged stress, and undergoing certain medical treatments can also lead to hair loss. Other causes of gradual hair loss include:
- Menopause
- Weight loss
- Lack of vitamins and proteins in your diet
- Diseases
- Hair products
Even washing and brushing your hair too much can lead to hair loss.
What is PRP?
Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a regenerative medicine treatment that uses plasma from your own blood to stimulate new hair growth. For more than a decade, physicians across numerous fields of medicine, from orthopedics to dermatologists, have been using PRP to facilitate the healing process after surgery, after an injury, or to improve skin aesthetically. PRP helps repair blood vessels, promote new cell growth, and stimulate collagen production.
Platelet-rich plasma contains high levels of proteins, or growth factors, that typically function to heal wounds and are instrumental in helping your blood clot. When Dr. Sedrak draws a sample of your own blood, he processes the blood in a centrifuge to separate out the platelets from your other blood components.
The PRP that he uses to inject into your scalp where you want to grow more hair contains a high concentration of growth factors. As a result, the PRP stimulates new hair growth exactly where you need it.
What can I expect with PRP treatments for hair loss?
When injected into your scalp, PRP promotes new hair growth by prolonging the growth phase of the hair follicles. The injections typically take just 10 minutes and aren’t painful. There’s no downtime after your appointment so you can return to your daily activities.
In most cases, you’ll come in for PRP injections once a month for up to six months. Within the first few months of treatment, you may notice that you’re losing less hair than before you began PRP treatments. Over the next several months, you may begin to notice increased hair thickness and new hair growth in the area where your hair was thinning.
Once you achieve your desired results, Dr. Sedrak may recommend coming in for maintenance PRP treatments every 4-6 months.
If you feel self-conscious about thinning hair and it’s affecting your quality of life, there’s something you can do about it. PRP is a natural, surgery-free way to combat hair loss. Call the office closest to you to learn more, or schedule a consultation online, today.
